State of the Art in Ray Tracing Animated Scenes

چکیده
Ray tracing has long been a method of choice for off-line rendering, but traditionally was too slow for interactive use. With faster hardware and algorithmic improvements this has recently changed, and real-time ray tracing is finally within reach. However, real-time capability also opens up new problems that do not exist in an off-line environment. In particular real-time ray tracing offers the opportunity to interactively ray trace moving/animated scene content. This presents a challenge to the data structures that have been developed for ray tracing over the past few decades. Spatial data structures crucial for fast ray tracing must be rebuilt or updated as the scene changes, and this can become a bottleneck for the speed of ray tracing. This bottleneck has received much recent attention by researchers that has resulted in a multitude of different algorithms, data structures, and strategies for handling animated scenes. The effectiveness of techniques for ray tracing dynamic scenes vary dramatically depending on details such as scene complexity, model structure, type of motion, and the coherency of the rays. Consequently, there is so far no approach that is best in all cases, and determining the best technique for a particular problem can be a challenge. In this STAR, we aim to survey the different approaches to ray tracing animated scenes, discussing their strengths and weaknesses, and their relationship to other approaches. The overall goal is to help the reader choose the best approach depending on the situation, and to expose promising areas where there is potential for algorithmic improvements.

BART: A Benchmark for Animated Ray Tracing
Due to the advent of ray tracing at interactive speeds and because there is an absence of a way to measure and compare performance and quality of ray traced scenes that are animated, we present an organized way to do this objectively and accurately in this proposal for BART: A Benchmark for Animated Ray Tracing. This is a suite of test scenes, placed in the public domain, designed to stress ray...
متن کاملGPU-Based Parallel Stackless BVH Traversal for Animated Distributed Ray Tracing
This paper presents a series of accelerations and techniques useful for performing interactive GPU-based distributed animated ray tracing. By taking advantage of several techniques used to accelerate ray tracing along with some additional effects, one is able to achieve enough speed to perform distributed ray tracing animated scenes at interactive rates. A framework is provided to load both lim...
متن کاملRay Tracing Animated Scenes using Motion Decomposition
Though ray tracing has recently become interactive, its high precomputation time for building spatial indices usually limits its applications to walkthroughs of static scenes. This is a major limitation, as most applications demand support for dynamically animated models. In this paper, we present a new approach to ray trace a special but important class of dynamic scenes, namely models whose c...
متن کاملDynamic Acceleration Structures for Interactive Ray Tracing
Acceleration structures used for ray tracing have been designed and optimized for efficient traversal of static scenes. As it becomes feasible to do interactive ray tracing of moving objects, new requirements are posed upon the acceleration structures. Dynamic environments require rapid updates to the acceleration structures. In this paper we propose spatial subdivisions which allow insertion a...
متن کاملRay tracing of dynamic scenes
In the last decade ray tracing performance reached interactive frame rates for nontrivial scenes, which roused the desire to also ray trace dynamic scenes. Changing the geometry of a scene, however, invalidates the precomputed auxiliary data-structures needed to accelerate ray tracing. In this thesis we review and discuss several approaches to deal with the challenge of ray tracing dynamic scen...
